Causes and Solutions for PT Pressure Transmitter Faults

Common faults of PT pressure transmitters are mainly concentrated in three areas: display, measurement, and output. The core troubleshooting approach is to first check the external environment and wiring, and then address any issues specific to the device itself.

Common Faults of PT Pressure Transmitter and Their Solutions

Output Too High

Potential Causes and Troubleshooting Methods:

  • Primary Element: Check the range of the primary element to ensure the PT pressure transmitter is not operating beyond its upper range limit.
Impulse Line: Inspect for leaks or blockages. Verify that shut-off valves are fully open. Check for gas in liquid lines or liquid in gas lines. Verify whether the density of the fluid in the impulse line has changed. Inspect the pressure chamber for debris.
  • Transmitter Electrical Connections: Ensure that the PT pressure transmitter wiring connectors are clean and properly seated.
  • Electronics Check: Compare the displayed pressure value with the actual pressure. If there is a significant deviation, recalibrate the transmitter or return it to the manufacturer for service.
  • Circuit Inspection: Confirm that the displayed pressure value matches the current output. If not, readjust the current output.
  • Sensor Assembly: Refer to the user maintenance manual of the pressure transmitter for detailed instructions.
  • Power Supply: Verify that the power supply voltage is within 18–30 VDC.

Unstable Output

Potential Causes and Troubleshooting Methods:

  • Parameter Check: Verify that the zero and span settings of the digital PT pressure transmitter are correct.
  • Loop Wiring: Check whether the voltage supplied to the transmitter is stable. Inspect for intermittent short circuits, open circuits, or multiple grounding points.
  • Process Medium Pulsation: Adjust the damping settings to compensate for pressure fluctuations.
  • Impulse Line: Check for gas in liquid lines or liquid in gas lines.
  • Electronics Check: Use the display to observe whether the pressure reading is stable. If instability originates from the sensor or the main circuit board, replace the sensor and the main circuit board.

Output Too Low or No Output

Potential Causes and Troubleshooting Methods:
Parameter Check: Verify that the zero and span settings are correct.

  • Primary Element: Inspect the installation and operating conditions of the primary element. Any changes in the characteristics of the measured medium can affect the output.
  • Loop Wiring: Check whether the voltage supplied to the transmitter is normal. Inspect for short circuits and multiple grounding points. Verify correct polarity and loop impedance.
  • Impulse Line: Ensure proper pressure connections. Check for leaks or blockages. Inspect for gas in liquid lines or debris in the pressure chamber. Verify that shut-off valves are fully open and that balance valves are fully closed. Check whether the density of the fluid in the impulse line has changed.
  • Electrical Connections: Inspect the sensor assembly wiring for shorts. Ensure the wiring connectors are clean. Verify connections with the sensor assembly.
  • Test Diode Faults: Replace the diode or short the test terminals.
  • Transmitter Electronics Fault: Use a spare board to test for circuit faults. Replace any faulty circuit boards.
  • Sensor Assembly: Refer to the PT pressure transmitter user maintenance manual for detailed instructions.

Faults in PT pressure transmitter can arise from multiple sources, such as power supply issues, sensor damage, environmental interference, or changes in the properties of the process medium. To ensure stable operation and measurement accuracy, the transmitter should be inspected and maintained regularly.
